Taking a road trip during a pandemic

Some of you already know about this but just to fill you in, Jeff and I have a daughter, son in law and two granddaughters who live in Chicago. They are both teachers and usually spend the summer with us. In order to get them to California safely right now, we have embarked on a socially distanced road trip. We borrowed a van from dear friends and have left Mendocino to drive to Kansas City in four days. The kids will drive to Kansas City and we will caravan back to California. We are staying in people's driveways/back yards that we know along the way, with us in the van and the kids in a tent. We have a bathroom and kitchen in the van so can totally social distance, even from our hosts along the way. At least that's the plan (more on that later). On the first night we drove from home to Sacramento, to the home and studio of our friends Richard and Jadelle.

The van is ready to roll from Mendocino. The statue on top of the bank was carved from one redwood log in the 1860s when Mendocino was first established. It sits atop what used to be the Masonic Hall, now the local bank. It depicts Father Time and the Maiden. I could wax poetic about how this relates to our trip but will let you do that. Richard socially distanced with us for breakfast next to one of his sculptures and in front of the gate that features swimming salmon made of burnished aluminum. We are off officially on to day two. Stay tuned.
